What is production efficiency?

Production efficiency, sometimes referred to as productive efficiency, is a measure of how well a company uses its resources to produce a good or service. The concept of production efficiency is based on the idea that there are many different ways to organize and manage production processes. Still, only some will result in the most efficient use of resources. Production processes can be organized in different ways:

For example, one manufacturer may have its assembly line set up so that each worker performs one specific task on every unit produced. In contrast, another manufacturer may have workers perform multiple tasks throughout the assembly process. In addition to these differences in organization, there are differences in management styles that affect how efficiently resources are used within an organization's production process (for example, lean management versus traditional command-and-control).

How is production efficiency used?

Production efficiency is used to measure the efficiency of a business. It can also be used to compare the efficiency of different companies or production processes. And if you're looking for an effective way to measure your performance in the workplace, this tool will help you do just that.

To measure production efficiency, you will need:

  • A chart that shows how many units were produced per hour (or day)
  • A second chart that shows how much time was spent on each unit produced

How is production efficiency calculated?

Production efficiency is calculated by dividing the actual output rate (i.e., total production amount at the time) by the standard output rate (i.e., the total production amount that’s standard). This is the formula you would use to calculate production efficiency:

Production efficiency

=

(Actual output rate   ÷

Standard output rate)

× 100%

For example, if you produce 12 bottle caps and generally make 20, your efficiency would be 12/20 = 0.6 x 100 = 60%. Your production efficiency is then 60%.

How do you improve production efficiency?

To improve production efficiency, you need to ensure that:

  • Your production process is efficient. This means using the right equipment and keeping up with maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
  • The quality of your product is high. If it's not, you need to reconsider the product’s designs and even the raw materials used for production.
  • You have the right people on your team to handle whatever happens during production (e.g., if someone goes sick or gets injured). It also means ensuring they have all the necessary training before working on anything important.

What are the advantages of measuring production efficiency?

Production efficiency is an important metric when it comes to measuring the overall performance of your company. It can be used to determine if a company is performing well and also helps improve productivity by identifying areas where improvement needs to occur. It also has many financial advantages for your business, including lower costs and increased revenue. For example, you may use production efficiency to reduce the cost of producing a product by using fewer resources or improving your process.
